the heat is on

When you end up in a city, the heat is on and humidity is something what you are not really used to, all you want to do is just get out of this urban heat island and head down to the beach. This city has one great advantage, it lies on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean which is cold enough to cool you down.

And the best thing about it, you don't really have to think too much how to get there. It's the subway which takes you there. If you have your week pass /31$/ it's all good, trains take you right to the beach. There are not many big cities like this around the world, at least I can't think of many. Maybe Rio and Barcelona, Dubai.. But if you think about real megapolis I don't think you would find any as big where all you need is to jump on a subway train and make your way down there.

It's weekend and train is quite packed tho. It's about one hour train ride from Midtown Manhattan and up to like 2hrs if you live in Bronx and decide to leave the hoods. On weekends trains are full of people taking their sunbeds, toys, newspapers, tanning oils, crying kids with little surfs and random people falling asleep.

For some reason, it's really easy to get some nap in these silver cars. I guess it's a combination of factors like the sounds of wheels and rail track, sauna-hot stations and extremely cold trains, then after you fight for your seat you fall a sleep and your head keeps falling on one side and another almost hitting this black guy who would like to punch you in the face.

Rockaway is indeed one of the most popular beaches in the states or in New York for sure. Back in 50s they built the world biggest car park and the development went on. The Island itself is full of houses and some ugly condos aswell but it is not as bad as so called Little Odessa which is full of Russians, Ukrainians and all these rather ran down 20fl high rises right on the beach.

I find these buildings located right on the beach even much worse looking than commie blocks back in Slovakia, however grass around them and surroundings look well-maintained tho.

they found a good spot indeed

The sea /ocean/ itself, isnt as great but come on, I mean, we are just on the outskirts of the city, its great there is any beach at all! But it is somehow green rather than blue, full of green stuff which will get around your ankles. Compared to European beaches, there are almost no cafes or restaurant and of course you shouldnt drink so much alcohol at the beach like back home /oh yes, remember this for your stag parties/.

going back to Manhattan, more than 1 hour ride
